Rollout of VDA5050: Our Lessons Learned

The VDA 5050 standard is revolutionizing the field of logistics automation by enabling interoperability between different Mobile Robots. By adopting VDA 5050, organizations can streamline their automation processes, reduce integration complexity, and ensure smoother operations across diverse robotic systems. Before implementing the standard in your organization, there are however several aspects that should be considered. Based on our first-hand experiences from multiple rollouts of the VDA 5050, we have collected the following Lessons Learned for you:

1. Ongoing Development:

  • VDA 5050 covers many critical aspects but still lacks some key functionalities.
  • Important AMR functions like obstacle avoidance are not included yet.
  • The standard continues to evolve with ongoing developments and updates.

2. Readiness of Suppliers:

  • Most software providers support VDA 5050, though compatibility levels vary.
  • Hardware providers display varying degrees of enthusiasm for the standard.
  • Marketing claims often exaggerate actual VDA 5050 compliance and capabilities.

3. Challenges with Mapping:

  • Manual alignment of maps between systems remains a significant challenge.
  • No unified master control map exists, causing extra work.
  • Mapping discrepancies are time-consuming and prone to errors.

4. Data Security Concerns:

  • Data transmission to external clouds may conflict with security policies.
  • Compliance with internal data security regulations is crucial.
  • Various deployment options, including cloud and local servers, are available.

5. Project Planning:

  • Non-VDA 5050 vehicles require additional engineering and customization.
  • A dedicated and creative project team is essential for success.
  • Onsite testing is vital to avoid operational disruptions and failures.

6. Vendor Compatibility:

  • Verify true VDA 5050 compliance through detailed technical discussions.
  • Marketing claims often don't reflect actual technical readiness.
  • Ensure vendors meet required standards and functionalities.

7. Implementation Effort:

  • Custom interfaces needed for non-VDA 5050 vehicles increase complexity.
  • Expect extra costs and time for workaround solutions and integrations.
  • Significant effort required for first-time onboarding of VDA 5050 vehicles.

8. Obstacle Handling:

  • AMRs present unique challenges not fully addressed by VDA 5050 yet.
  • Different vendors employ various workaround solutions for AMR functionalities.
  • The standard currently favors AGVs over more complex AMRs.

9. Onsite Testing:

  • Essential to test systems in actual shop floor environments.
  • Prevent unexpected failures during live operations with thorough testing.
  • Validate robot behavior under real-world conditions to ensure reliability.

10. Stakeholder Communication:

  • Engage all relevant stakeholders early in the project planning phase.
  • Address concerns from security, data officers, and labor unions comprehensively.
  • Highlight the pioneering nature and potential challenges of the project

Conclusion: 

VDA 5050 … Step one, far from done. This is how we would summarize our Lessons Learned. The VDA 5050 standard provides a great foundation for the interoperability of different Mobile Robots. It is however still in the development phase with blind spots being closed with each new version. As an Early Adopter, you should therefore be aware that the implementation of the standard won’t be a plug-and-play project. By keeping the above aspects in mind, you will still make you rollout a success.
